Wood, the most important energy source of the past

For thousands of years, wood was the most important source of energy for mankind. In Kiefersfelden, a charcoal burning site was established as early as 1611, where charcoal burners processed the wood from the Thiersee forests into charcoal. Woodcutters were responsible for felling the trees and transporting them by water to the charcoal works - a job that was not without its dangers.

Here you can learn about the traditional craft of charcoal burners and woodcutters and find out more about their everyday work.
