Cement Industry

This black-and-white photograph shows emaciated forced labourers stacking sacks of cement onto sack trucks and removing them from conveyor belts in a production hall. Each sack weighs 50 kg.

How ‘the era of white roofs’

began and ended

The last industry to be based in Kiefersfelden was the cement works, which produced tonnes of cement around the clock. The plant was finally closed in 2002. This marked the end of almost 400 years of industrial history in Kiefersfelden.

The cement works secured numerous jobs for many decades, but also caused resentment among the local population due to the enormous dust and smoke pollution.

This is a perspective view of the cement room, with the interactive station visible in black and white from the front. In the centre of the room is a display case containing a remote detonator.Clouds of smoke in a projection obscure the view of the site in the exhibition.
