Iron Industry

High-quality steel from Kiefersfelden

Around 1700, an ironworks was built in Kiefersfelden next to Kohlstatt - the founder was Tyrolean and brought around 200 of his countrymen with him to work here. High-quality steel was produced here for almost two centuries. The museum building itself also dates back to the time of the ironworks and served as the workers' home. It was not until 1877 that the last blast furnaces were shut down.

How is iron and steel produced? And what was the everyday life of a worker in the ironworks like? The exhibition explains the individual stages of iron smelting and the importance of the ironworks for the town.

This 18th-century oil painting, which depicts the ironworks, is now displayed in the town hall in Kiefersfelden.
