The museum was founded by the dedicated citizens Sepp Bleier, Otto Plattner and Josef Reheis - former employees of the marble works - who started managing and running the museum on a voluntary basis in 1996.

They laid the foundations for the museum collection and the extensive archive on local and industrial history. They were also responsible for the first permanent exhibition, which was replaced by a completely new exhibition concept in November 2024.

The collection mainly comprises objects relating to industrial history: historical tools, models and material samples, products, documents and photographs relating to the individual branches of industry. In addition, a large collection of photographs and postcards on local history and social, musical and theatre culture has been established and exhibits on these topics collected.
